Sheep Traits

group of sheep

It is no surprise that sheep are a recurring metaphor in Scripture for the relationship between God and God’s people. Jesus is often referred to as shepherd and his followers likened to sheep.

The comparison is apt: Sheep, being self-involved and not particularly smart, need a lot of help just to get along. Otherwise, they tend to stray and fall prey to predators. Sound familiar? Sure. Even though we are God’s people and Jesus’ followers, our weak human nature makes us selfish, easily distracted and tempted to go another way.

These sheep traits offer a humorous look at the human weakness and occasional folly in our imperfect attempts to follow the Gospel in our daily living. The sheep in The Flock help us recognize and reflect on our relationship with God and consider how to strengthen our efforts.

Reflection:

Soooo…we don’t pray so God can hear from us. Anything we might have to say, God has already known since before the beginning of time. No, we pray in order to hear from God. So we need to listen. And we can’t listen if we are talking the whole time. No need to fill prayer time with information for God. Pipe down. An occasional question, or a traditional prayer may help as an opening. But mostly listen.

PRAYER: (shhhh) Amen
